The following free services are available to owners of pre-1978 residential property in the cities of Alameda, Berkeley, Emeryville, and Oakland:

In-Home Consultation

Most homes built before 1978 have old layers of lead-based paint. It can become a hazard when it peels or is disturbed during renovations. Learn how to look for lead hazards in your home. Schedule a home visit with our skilled staff who will conduct a visual survey of your home and provide an individualized consultation. Lead Consultation Service Application

Lead Safe Home Renovation Classes

Free classes are offered to property owners who are planning home renovations or are concerned about lead hazards in the home. Knowledgeable program staff provide the basics on how to identify lead hazards and how to safely conduct home repair and painting projects.. Participants learn how to control lead dust through containment and safe work practices. Information about personal protective equipment is also included. Classes typically last for 2 hours and include time for questions and answers.  Learn more...

Financial Assistance

Financial assistance for lead hazard repair work
The Alameda County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program periodically offers financial assistance as funds become available for lead hazard repair work for rental properties with low-income tenants, and on an emergency basis for homes with lead poisoned children in the cities of Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville. Funds are currently not available but we are accepting pre-applications for placement on an interest list. Applicants will be notified when funds become available. "Protect Your Family From Lead In Your Home" Pamphlets

Federal law requires that owners of residential properties built before 1978 disclose all known lead hazards to their tenants and to all potential buyers, and to provide tenants and potential buyers with the EPA/HUD pamphlet titled "Protect Your Family From Lead In Your Home". Copies of the forms and pamphlet are available from the Alameda County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. A reproducible copy of the pamphlet can also be downloaded from www.epa.gov/lead or www.hud.gov/offices/lead
