Healthy Homes Training
The ACLPPP provides training to people in Alameda County in order to increase awareness and knowledge of lead safety and healthy housing principles. Training is provided to those involved in helping families to improve the health and the safety of their home environment, including home visitors and those in construction, maintenance, and regulation of housing. The Program also acts as a resource to build capacity in others so they can carry out these trainings in California.
Who Does The Program Train?
The ACLPPP Healthy Housing project provides training to:
- Health and housing home visitors in Alameda County to recognize existing or potential housing-related problems and suggest low-cost, effective solutions to these problems, provide education to occupants, and encourage occupant behavior change to improve health.
- Housing rehabilitation and weatherization program staff to support the incorporation of healthy housing principles in these programs in Alameda County.
- Partner agency staff to promote and support efforts to make systemic change towards integration of healthy housing principles and interdisciplinary cooperation among agencies, partnerships, and collaborations in Alameda County,
What Trainings Are Provided?
The ACLPPP is a National Center for Healthy Housing Training Partner (see below for more detail) and offers the following National Center courses:
- Essentials for Healthy Homes Practitioners:
This two-day course makes the connection between health and housing and promotes a holistic approach to identify and resolve problems which threaten the health of residents. This comprehensive training course is appropriate for a wide range of home visitors and professionals involved in housing and housing-related health issues. - Integrated Pest Management in Multi-Family Housing:
This one-day course can help a property manager or public housing authority to implement a comprehensive integrated pest management program by bringing the stakeholders, especially resident leaders and property maintenance personnel, together to develop the skills and practices needed to effectively identify, understand, and eliminate pests such as cockroaches and rodents from multi-family housing. - Health Opportunities in Energy Audits and Upgrades:
This one-day course teaches energy efficiency staff about healthy housing and explains how energy efficiency is only one part of a safe and healthy home. - Healthy Housing for Community Health Workers:
This is a one-day course for home visitors such as Community Health Workers with experience in providing in-home education. This course increases the range of knowledge of CHWs so they can provide healthy homes information to members of their communities. The course is targeted to individuals who work as health advocates in their communities. - Code Inspection for Healthier Homes:
A four-hour course that connects housing conditions to residents' health, identifies health-related provisions of standardized codes, and addresses enforcement strategies related to healthy housing issues. This course focuses more on the International Property Maintenance Code and covers a wider range of healthy housing issues.
In addition, the ACLPPP provides the following classes and presentations :
- Healthy Housing Overview for Rental Property Owners:
A two-hour overview introduces rental property owners to the impact of unhealthy housing, healthy housing principles, steps they can take to maintain healthy housing units, and relationship to laws and regulations. - Healthy Housing Overview for Agencies:
In development, this two-to-four hour class will introduce staff of partner agencies to healthy homes principles, the impact of unhealthy homes, and examples of healthy housing interventions and programs.

The National Center For Healthy Housing
The National Center for Healthy Housing is a nonprofit corporation based in Columbia, Maryland, dedicated to creating healthy and safe homes for children. Using a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, NCHH brings the public health, housing, environmental, and regulatory communities together to combat disease and injuries caused by hazards in the home.
